January in Review

Toward the end of each month, I post a review of my goals, what I'm currently reading, a homeschool update, as well as other tidbits of information. I hope you like these monthly posts, they are usually well received. Let me know if you'd like to see other information in this roundup!

January Goals

You can find all of my 2020 goals here. Here are my January goals with updates:
  • Daily: Up by 7:30 | I struggled with this goal. But then came back strong the last week to end the month! As you can see above, I count that as a big win.
  • Daily: No "S" Diet | I kind of threw this goal out the window by the middle of the month. I think I just tried to tackle it too quickly. So I decided to focus on simply getting up early.
  • Weekly: Spend time with each child individually | I didn't do as well as I had hoped with this goal. I missed one whole week because I was struggling and then went out of town as well.
  • Weekly: Family fun | We did great here except one week. And we have plans on Sunday for family fun, so I'm going to count that still.
  • Weekly: Move my body | I struggled with this goal too. I just need to find time in my schedule to make it non-negotiable to get moving.
  • Weekly: Read Memory-Making Mom | I'm really enjoying this book, so this has been an easy goal to accomplish. I shared a little snippet here where I was convicted of a quote the author included.
  • Monthly: Pick out encouraging family book to read | I chose The Storm-Tossed Family as the book I want to read.
  • Monthly: Make a list of games for 5 people | Michael helped me achieve this goal! WooHoo for teamwork!
  • Monthly: Read Teaching from Rest | I read this on our homeschool break and it was so good to be reminded and encouraged. This was a reread and I should really pull it out every quarter. It's that good.
  • Monthly: Find a homeschool podcast | I took a trip to visit my sister by myself! And I took the 4-hour drive as a perfect opportunity to find a homeschool podcast. Although, I really didn't find exactly what I was looking for. But I did try out more than a handful! Yesterday I search for some more options to consider.
  • Monthly: Have an in-depth cleaning day | Done! I feel back on track now.
  • Monthly: Enjoy my mamacation | What a fun time I had on my mamacation this year.
  • Monthly: Celebrate Jazmine's 13th Birthday | We are going to be doing this tonight. What a fun day to celebrate our oldest daughter becoming a teenager. We are having a simply dinner and cake. But then her and I will be going to a hotel for the night for a fun treat!

Currently Reading

  • Boundaries | I made some good progress on this audiobook on the car drive home from my sister's house.
  • Through the Bible, Through the Year | I chose this as my devotional for the year. So far I'm enjoying it. It is quite different than last year's devotional, New Morning Mercies. But I think I'll like it overall. I didn't realize you are supposed to, in theory, start in September. But I fumbled my way through finding a spot to begin.
  • Homeschooling When Learning Isn't Easy | This book is a little different than I thought. It's been okay though.
  • Little Women | I started this book after seeing the movie and absolutely loving it. I'm not that far into it yet, but I can tell it's going to be good.
  • The Common Rule | Again, not very far into this one either, but so far it sounds fantastic!

Homeschool News

  • We enjoyed our break week. Truly I am loving this "6 week on, 1 week off" schedule. It feels like a perfect fit for us. We enjoyed our break week and dove right back into our coursework this week refreshed and ready.
  • Finding a rhythm for my 7th-grade student. We again encountered some difficulties. We had tried to give her more freedom to find her own rhythm for completing her work. But it simply did not work, so we took over her schedule again. I think this is just going to be a process.
  • Deciding on what we are doing next year. It's around this time that I start planning for next year. We always buy our curriculum with our tax return, so I need to be ready to know what I want to do.

My Favorite Things

  • Quiet car rides. As I mentioned above (twice!), I got to enjoy a long and quiet car ride to myself this month.
  • My evening routine. I really feel like this is my favorite time of the day. I've blogged about it before. But this month it felt extra good at the end of each tiring day to find my groove in my routine and recharge and decompress.
