October in Review

Toward the end of each month, I post a review of my goals, what I'm currently reading, a homeschool update, YouTube videos from that month, as well as other tidbits of information. I hope you like these monthly posts, they are usually well received. Let me know if you'd like to see other information in this roundup!

October Goals

You can find all of my 2020 goals here. Here are my October goals with updates:
  • Daily: Word Before World | I achieved this goal every day! It has become a habit and joy to start my day in the Word.
  • Daily: Read | I accomplished this goal about half the time. For the first month of working on it, I will call that a victory!
  • Weekly: Family Fun or Bucket List | We did something each week together. It has been so fun to work through our fall bucket list. Plus we are shaping our family culture and creating memories. That is why this goal is so important to me!
  • Weekly: Spend time with each child individually | I've got a pretty good success rate here. Again, I only missed one week with one child. Otherwise, I am spending quality time together with each of them. It is an honor to build and cultivate my relationship with my children.
  • Weekly: Listen to a homeschool podcast | I only did this half of the time. Now, I think why is because I've been watching more homeschool YouTube videos and seeking to grow relationships there. I'm still getting encouragement, it's just in a different avenue.
  • Weekly: Try a new activity to come alive | This goal stemmed from feeling like I was lacking in my "recreation" area of life as I did the quarterly refresh for the fall in my Powersheets. However, this month I realized that I actually do have several hobbies that I wasn't taking into account. Mainly reading. And building that daily reading habit has been so life-giving to me! I hardly accomplished this goal, in terms of trying something new. But I consider my perspective shift as a victory!
  • Monthly: Have a date with Michael | Done! It was so fun to get back out and eat together and have time to talk and connect.
  • Monthly: YouTube/Blog Brainstorm Session | Just did this last night. I'm really encouraged about the ways God has given me to encourage others through blogging and YouTube. I want to proceed with care and intention and use my platforms to build up others. I hope that is what you get when you come here.
  • Monthly: Poetry Tea Time | It was our first month trying to get back at the habit of having Poetry Tea Time. I decided to add it here as well as my calendar to make sure that it happened. And it did! It was so fun to be back at it and share good treats and hot drinks over poetry. I'm planning to do it monthly on the first Thursday of each month. To make it regular.

Currently Reading

  • Adore | I am really enjoying this book. It paints this picture of adoring God in the most awe-inspiring way. I love it!
  • Sacred Chaos | I started reading this one in the afternoons with my reading goal and I have thoroughly enjoyed it. It brings to life ordinary moments for God's presence and connecting with Him right there, in the chaos.
  • Hands Free Mama | I have had this book for a long while but haven't actually read it before. But I felt led to pick it up and start reading it. I'm really early into it but loving the steady small voice of putting down screens and laying aside productivity for the purpose of connection with those you love.
  • Treasuring God in Our Traditions | I picked this one up after getting a coupon from Amazon! I've been eyeing it for a while and am glad I got it. I'm really early into this one too. But I'm excited to read it especially as we approach the holidays.

Homeschool News

  • We are on our week-long break before diving into our third term. This week hasn't been what I thought it would be. We've just rested a lot and hung out around the house. But despite not being what I expected, I have loved it and the slow pace has been a refreshing and much-needed break.
  • This term will have a different pace. With the holidays approaching, we are actually going to be schooling for three weeks, then take a one week break for Thanksgiving, then three more weeks of school, and then a one week break for Christmas. I'm actually looking forward to this.
  • We are going to be adding some fun things from the Winter Homeschool Bundle. I was so excited to get my hands on this bundle and cannot wait to print some of the pages and enjoy doing them with my kids. I think it will add a whole lot of fun to our school experience this late-fall/winter.
  • We are currently "in" Norway. I'm making a Norwegian cake next week to celebrate finishing up studying about Norway. Then we are headed to France! You can learn more about our curriculum here.
  • 8th-grader has struggled this month. It has been a difficult month to homeschool my 8th-grade student. She has struggled with motivation and desire and it has drained the joy out of her schooling. I'm hoping this coming month and term goes better.

YouTube Videos

My Favorite Things

  • FaceTiming with my sister. This is a small way to stay connected despite the miles that separate us.
  • Getting my annual doctors' appointments taken care of. It's not the most fun things in the world, but it feels good to have them done and not to worry about them anymore.
  • Facebook groups. They are by far my favorite part of Facebook! I love connecting with others over shared interests.
